AI for memory, not novelty

I built fixmypics because old family photos do not need to be perfect. They need to be better.

I have thousands of old family images with dust, scratches, fading, and damage. I do not need them to be perfect. I need them clear enough to look at, share, and show my family.

AI should help make the world better. For fixmypics, that means helping people restore what time damaged, preserve what families remember, and reconnect with the people and places that shaped them.

It started with one impossible archive

My grandfather was an attorney who fell in love with a camera. He photographed all fifty states, most of them more than once. The photography bug passed to my father, who eventually bought a photo lab and spent his days printing other families' memories while quietly adding to ours.

Today I'm the keeper of both archives: tens of thousands of images, from both sides of my family, reaching back to the 1940s. Time has been at work on every one of them: scratches, dust, fading, color casts, creases, water damage, and the occasional tear.

The reason this exists

My mom's wedding day made the mission obvious

To have clear pictures of it again - her gown, the bouquet, the color of that afternoon - is priceless. I think she'd be ecstatic to see it restored like this.

One restored photo is moving. A restored album is something else: a whole day starting to come back.

AI made restoration possible at family scale

Restoring that archive the old way was impossible. At $30 to $90 per photo, professional retouching across an archive that size costs more than a house. Doing it by hand myself, even knowing how, would take decades.

I'm an AI and machine learning engineer, and I also know retouching the old way. I started in Photoshop 2.5, decades ago, and have taught the craft. That mix matters here: the goal is not to reinvent your family, but to repair the damage standing between you and the photo.

"There was no way I could restore them all. I couldn't afford it, and I couldn't live long enough to do it by hand. AI changed that math."

fixmypics is built around albums, memory, and trust

Pro tools are great at sharpening, denoising, upscaling, and finishing images. This is different. fixmypics is for people who want to bring back the people, places, and days their family remembers.

A whole day, not one perfect pixel

This is the difference: the photo becomes usable again.

The point is not to make an old family picture look like a new studio portrait. The point is to clear away enough damage that the gown, the flowers, the faces, and the afternoon can come back into view.

What fixmypics is careful about

Every restoration runs under one strict rule: fix the damage, never change the people. Where detail is uncertain, the model is steered toward a softer result instead of inventing a new face.
